CINEMA: NEWER MOVIES
As I’ve said in previous posts, I am a huge Godzilla fan and I think it’s safe to say that I have watched just about all of the Godzilla movies, from the 1954 classic all the way up to 2014. And now, finally “Shin Godzila (2016).” It is with great disappointment that I have to say I still hate all the more recent Godzilla movies. Unless I am forgetting one, it is my opinion that most Godzilla movies beyond “Mechagodzilla (1974)” is trash. Sorry 🙁 However, when I saw the trailer for “Shin Godzila (2016),” I just knew I had to see it. It’s a good thing I’m a Netflix member, ’cause if I had to pay for this movie, I would have been one pissed-off fan. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the special effects, but the acting was just bad… Look, I know the ratings on IMDB & RT where good. But those phenomenal reviews have got to be for the movie’s special effects, not it’s actors. Let’s start off with the way Godzilla looks in this movie. Now, this Godzilla is a big bitch, and I do mean HUGE, and once you see how big he actually gets, you know he’s about to destroy some cities. But, I understand that Godzilla is a monster, he was never meant to look cute. But what’s with this obsession (and I’m including both American and Japanese film makers) with making Godzilla looking more Demonic rather than Extraterrestrial? Is this an attempt in giving Godzilla a scarier and “monstrous new look?” By the time I got to the middle of the movie, Godzilla’s skin looked like it was burnt and chard, with larva emanating out of open wounds. This doesn’t compute in my head, how Godzilla would look like, if he’s a monster that feeds off radio active energy (that’s just me).
Godzilla reminds me of an Alien movie that I saw, where the whole bottom of his jaw splits to release something out of his mouth. I gotta tell you, the best part of this whole entire movie is when Godzilla breaths fire. At some point, Godzilla got so huge and powerful, that he didn’t even breath fire, he shot beams of light that cut planes in half. Now that was something I’ve never seen before. Godzilla created mass destruction, as I expected. And the beautiful part was, Godzilla did this type of mass destruction without looking like a man in a dinosaur suit. LOL
I have to be honest, the English dub made it almost unbearable to watch. Why? The actors were all monotone. I almost thought it was just a bad comedy. This is one of those movies were it looked more exciting watching it in their native language w/subtitles. Despite the horrendous acting in this movie (and I do mean horrible), there were some interesting “takeaways” from this movie. First, how the Japanese did not want to rely on the American president to help them destroy Godzilla. they were so animate about it, I thought to myself that, that was a political statement right there. The other takeaway was, so many people in “power,” yet almost no one really wanted to be in charge or take charge (or knew what they were doing), pointing fingers at each other when things went wrong. In the end, I give this movie an A+ for special effects and visual direction, and for using no or very little CGI if any. It really looked realistic. But the acting really, really sucks (at least the English dub does). But then again, maybe I’m too harsh? Let’s be honest, for most of us, when we hear about a new Godzilla movie, all we really care about is watching him destroy sh*t. LOLOL.
You know, I can’t be the only one to think about this? Have you ever thought what it would be like if mutants were real? Like, outside of the fictitious definition of what a mutant is, or what we’ve seen on TV so far? What if Iron Man was real? If Tony Stark really existed in real life, he would need 24 hour security outside of his iron suit. Why? I think he would be constantly in danger of being kidnapped by our foreign enemies, and force him to build an army of weaponized suits against America. What do you think?
I think if given the opportunity, if Wonder Woman should ever get severely hurt by a powerful being, or terrestrial, the CIA would do every single kind of testing imaginable to discover the secret of her enormous strength. I think the government would confiscate her bracelets to discover the material it’s made out of. I think with that knowledge, instead of reproducing copies of these bracelets, they would create indestructible body armor and use it to empower our military. As far as her magic lasso, I’m not sure. Sometimes I imagine the government wouldn’t think it has any scientific value, if they view it as the “lasso of truth.” But if they knew that her lasso was also unbreakable, they would have the same amount of interest with her lasso as with her bracelets. What do you think?
Last but not least, my very favorite mutant of all times. Ororo Munroe, also known by her code name “Storm.” She is one of the original X-Men. Although I think she is too powerful to be vulnerable, but technically, she doesn’t need her mutant powers really, because she is damn near a martial artist. She can kick-ass with or without weapons. However, like most mutants, she does have a weakness. Storm is extremely claustrophobic. Anytime she is “closed in” or encased inside anything, she goes completely buzzerk. I really wouldn’t be surprised if the government would go to the extreme of starving her to death boxed in a sound proof room. As there are people who hate mutants the fictional world, surely you wouldn’t think that none of us wouldn’t be scared shitless (especially after seeing what Magneto can do)? Therefore it is completely possible that the government would do such a thing. After storms death, they would perform decades worth of autopsy(s) on her body. I would imagine her brain would be the central focus, to figure out what part of her brain would control the weather. Her body would never be laid to rest. Every bit of her essence would be used for science. There would be nothing left. What do you think?
Don’t Breathe (2016), IMDB, YouTube trailer. Starring, Stephen Lang, Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette (whom I ALWAYS mistaken him for one of the Jonas brothers (by the way, all of the Jonas brother grew up to be very handsome men IMHO). If you like thriller movies, this will NOT disappoint you in my humble opinion. You guys really need to Netflix this bitch and see it! Just about every major movie website has given this rave reviews! And that includes Rotten Tomatoes, so don’t just take it from me 😀 . Now, most of my blog fans who really follow me, know my feelings about very young actors; they’re usually the stereotypical bullshit, with the college students driving up to some house in a secluded location to “unwind.” They start having a bunch of sex, and the next thing you know some monster, vampire, alien whatever, comes out and slaughters or eats them all up. Yada yada, yada. Boy, did this movie shock the hell out of me! Totally blew my mind! Kind of got a little bit “Blair Witch” for me towards the middle of the movie. But, please trust me, it was totally worth my time watching!
So you have these 3 deadbeat teens, handsome Daniel Zovatto (although he had only a small role, he was very believable in this role), Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette. In a nutshell, these kids are hoodlums, and go around robbing people. Actually, I should say two of them, because I could tell right away that Dylan did not want to be involved. He really was just there for the because he liked Jane. So, unbeknown to him, Dylan learns that his love of his life is leaving for good, while in the midst of planing “the big hit.” They learn that an old blind guy has got a huge settlement as a result of a murder of his daughter and his injuries (and keeps ALL of the cash in the house). Now, I have to be honest, my first thought was, this is going to be a bullshit movie, how much good is this going to be?!?! I pictured a bunch of talking and negotiating. NOT!!! The guy who is played by Stephen Lang, is NO ordinary guy. Before I continue, I have to say that this old guy was ripped!!! Oh my goodness. He’s an old man in a young mans body. He was just too pumped! Well, I guess he had to be in order to pull off this role.
Stephen had a surprise for their ass honey! Yes!!! The three thugs broke in to his house and all hell broke loose. I have to be honest though, by the end of the movie, I had so many mixed emotion about Stephen. I felt sorry for him, but on the other hand, by the end of the movie I’m thinking, HE was the bad guy. Stephen wasn’t just protecting himself, he was hunting the three down with the focus of trying to kill all of them. Homeboy locked the doors, bordered windows, and got busy. It wasn’t until further down the movie that I realized Stephen was also trying to hide a big secret. He was hiding someone in his basement. The person in that basement has a short part, but was one of the many important keys to this puzzle. Now, again, this had a lot of action, and damn realistic for a guy being blind. You can clearly tell that he was planning this moment, like he knew someone was going to break in!
Oh, did I mention that they also had to fight an attack dog, whom I call Cujo! I call him Cujo because he looked and acted just like him! Now, will all three survive and escape before Stephen kills them all? Will they discover that hidden person in the basement in time? Or more importantly, will they be to try and save that person? Now, you know I don’t like giving out spoilers unless I am forced to. So I’ll just stop right here, cause I’ve said enough. Rent this movie From Netflix, you will definitely enjoy it!! Incredible acting, and lots of suspense.
I love to watch foreign movies. However, normally I don’t watch Spanish movies, only because the movies that are marketed to the United States, or English speaking countries, only play up to the stereo types (as if it is the only way it will sell). Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places? I mean, I have a wealth of resources, and yet the only Spanish movies I’m able to find most of, are the ones that can be boiled down to three categories; drug cartels, novelas (that contains a bunch of women slapping somebody or each other, as if that’s all Spanish women do all day? Yeah, that’s realistic 🙁 ), or a bunch of romance movies that don’t have strong captivating story lines. Searching for good Spanish movies is very difficult for me. If anyone knows of really good action Spanish movies, send me a direct twitter message. I did come a cross a movie called “Asmodexia (2014).” I’m not going to say it was a good movie “per say,” but it did have all the elements of a good classic horror movie made in 2014.
First off, I wouldn’t put this movie in the gore genre, but there were many scenes that was so gross, it was awesome! I just wish the acting was a little better. To be honest, I think the only two things that kept my attention, was being determined to understand what’s going on; and the other was just hoping to see the next big disgusting thing. Now, the movie isn’t “Hellraiser (1987)” disgusting, but it had the potential to be. There are a lot of things going on in this movie, I’ll try to condense my writing as small as possible.
So, this old guy who is a preacher/exorcist is traveling around town casting out demons, as well as teaching and grooming his granddaughter to do the same thing to take his place. What I couldn’t help but to find interesting, was that throughout the movie, they never once took a bus or a car whilst on their travels. I don’t know if that was an over-site on the director’s part, or maybe it was to signify spiritual strength, I don’t know. Now, turns out there is something very important about this girl. I can’t (or shouldn’t) say anything more about her, I’ll risk giving out a major spoiler. So I’ll stop right here. But I will say this, I was taken back on how androgynous she looks. I almost thought I would see something from “Sleep Away Camp (1983).” LOLOL Those who saw that movie know what I’m talking about.
The make up on this woman was pretty good. But I don’t know who idea it was to put that green coloring on her teeth, but that shit was a bad idea. That green candy looking mixture just made the overall makeup look fake, don’t you think? They probably ran out of fake blood, and had to compensate. LOLOL BUT. BUT. There was a scene where this demon possessed lady vomited on another woman’s face, it was so disgusting! Yuk!! So the young grand daughter came to exorcise the demon out of her, and was successful. Dead, but successful. LOLOL.
Again, there are some good scary moments in the movie, but I liked it not because it was a “good movie,” I liked it because it’s different, and nothing else I’ve seen. I’m not going to lie, by the end of the movie, it left me saying to myself.. WTF???????? I was left feeling like I didn’t know whether the preacher or the girl was bad or good. Turns out the preacher/exorcist isn’t what he leads us to believe! Again, I am terribly sorry, but unfortunately, it was too hard writing about this movie without giving up major spoilers. But what I can say, is that it involves a resurrection. This movie alludes to a part 2, however, it is nowhere to be found (at least I can’t find it in the U.S.). All I can say is, see the movie for the foreign special effects, and the occasional weird soft gore. Considering all the novela like movies all over streaming, this is a change of pace. Watch on Netflix.
I am happy to announce that Ip Man 3 (2015) is streaming on Netflix with English audio! This must be exclusive to Netflix, because as far as I know, the Blu-Ray doesn’t have it (only English subs). As I’ve said before, I love All the Ip Man(s) in the Ip Man trilogies. This latest Ip Man played by yet again, the talented Donnie Yen, was no exception. There were about 3 story lines in this movie that were kind of hard to keep up. Lots and lots of action and special effects as always. The only thing is, I don’t know how much of this was the real Ip Man, and how much of it was non-fiction. There are so many different writings and opinions, I just don’t know.
Kwok-Kwan Chan, plays Bruce Lee in the movie. Unfortunately, he had an extremely small role in the movie, which makes me think there’s a possibility of an Ip Man 4. I was taken back on not just how much he looks like him, but how much he got Bruce Lee’s mannerisms to a tee! If I didn’t know any body, I would have said this must be his young son. He gave us a little taste of what he can do with his martial arts, and it looks really good. I really do hope that my assumptions are true, that there will be an Ip Man 4; because in the movie, Donnie does state that he wants to teach him Kwok eventually. If that’s the case, it could be a “Ip Man 4 and Bruce Lee” movie. I know Kwok will tear up some a**.
Now, regardless whether Tyson was playing in this movie or not, I was going to see it anyway. But I gotta tell you, he did much better than I expected, yet at the same time, it was extremely weird to watch them fight. It was like a showdown between boxing vs. Karate. Despite the weirdness of it all, it was quite interesting. It looks realistic looking. Usually in most martial arts movies, it’s usually the American style fighter that gets their ass beat, but Tyson held his own. Tyson plays a big mafia boss, that’s trying to take over the city, bullying people to sell off their business, and the police is powerless to stop it. It’s up to Donne to make the town safe again.
While Donnie is trying to fight for law and order, you have another guy, Jin Zhang, who plays both sides of bad and good (for the purpose of trying to gain some kind of recognition). He tries to get in to Donnie’s head to learn his weaknesses, ultimately so he can prove to be the true master fighter. His goal is to eventually build his own martial arts school, offering skills that is supposed to be superior to Donnie (Ip Man). When Tyson sends a bunch of thugs to kidnap both Ip Man and Jin’s son’s his attitude changes and fights on Ip Man’s side. But unfortunately, it didn’t get rid of the need for Jin to prove that he was the greatest fighter over Donnie, including publicly challenge him to a fight.
Through all of crap Ip Man is going through, he also had to deal with finding out his wife is dying of cancer. How the hell Ip Man will get through all of this? Ip Man gave up so much to help others, but there was no one to really help him. Will Ip Man be able to safe the day? Will Ip Man wind up killing Jin because of his unquenchable thirst to prove he is the best? I highly recommend that you check this movie out. And by the way, the English translation is pretty darn good. Watch it on Netflix.
So, scrapped up enough money to see X-Men APOCALYPSE (2016) in 3D. As always, as a huge fan of X-Men, I think this 2 and a half hour movie was AWESOME!! However, this time, the 3 dimensional effects wasn’t as strong as I expected. Don’t get me wrong, the special effects were fantastic! But as much as I love X-Men, I recommend that fans just see the 2D version, you’ll save some money, and enjoy it just as much. I should warn you that if you haven’t seen the movie yet, and you’re a die-hard comic book fan as well, a LOT of things you’ll see will annoy you. Nothing will make sense to you, if you’re expecting the story line to follow the comic books. You’ll have to watch the movie with a very open mind, it’s the only way you’ll really enjoy it without being annoyed.
You know, one of the many things that make me a fan of X-Men, are the global characters. It would have been nice to have a little more Latino representation in the movie (I’m not one to get on the “race” bandwagon when it comes to movies, I’m just saying). Speaking of which, for those of us that have seen the movie, have you noticed how much Latina Olivia Munn (who plays Psylocke) looks? She’s gorgeous in the movie though. Unfortunately, she did not have a big part in the movie; but the little she did, was a powerful performance.
So, in essence Apocalypse is another very powerful mutant, who sees himself as a god. Apocalypse has been re-awakened and is on a mission to cleanse the world by destroying everything in it. Any mutant left alive will help rebuild earth. Although the movie had loads of action, this movie also focused a lot on the psyche of each character; their fears of knowing that the world will end not knowing exactly how to stop it, or if they will even be successful doing it. Apocalypse was a special kind of mutant that no other mutant in the movie’s time frame has ever encountered. Xavier’s kids were still students; but once they realized that Apocalypse has the ability to steal a mutant’s powers; at that moment they became the X-Men. You see, the one thing that would technically put Apocalypse in “god” status, is to steal Xavier’s powers of mind control.
What made it even worse, we all know how powerful of a mutant Magneto is. After Magneto’s wife and daughter was murdered at the same time in front of him, Apocalypse used this and the fact that his parent’s were also taken away as a child; to get him to join him in the pursuit of destroying the world. That’s a lot of rage Magneto will unleash. It’s hard to defeat Magneto as it is, how the hell our heroes can fight both the master of magnetism and a thousand+ year old mutant?
I don’t want to say too much more, but I will say that there was a surprise appearance of a mutant that helped rescue a couple of our heroes (indirectly). I had the impression that this was the last installment; but after watching it, it is very obvious their going to at least branch off in to different segments for each hero. I’m likely to believe that the rumors of Storm, Angel, and Cyclopes getting their own movies, just may be true. Let me also just say, something happens with Jean that will BLOW YOUR MIND! Awesome special effects! Please don’t see the bootleg, spend the extra money to see it in a theater, it’s the only way to get the full effect. Or wait for it on Netflix. Again, it’s not exact to the comic books, but watching it happen was freak’n’ awesome! JMHO.
You know, for action filled Sci-Fi movies like this, I usually wait for the 3D version. However, there doesn’t appear to be any (be it streaming or disc), and I’m not sure why? This is a huge franchise so I don’t think it’s an issue of funds. I’m wondering it could be they’re looking in to how they would package the various “collector blu-rays” for the various types of movie fans. Well, regardless if you’re a 3D fan, or 2D, or the fan that wants all of the behind the scenes blu-ray, or the fan that wants some kind of memorabilia with that blu-ray, I knew that it would be a long time I would see that disc (just because of the sheer fandom of it all). Never the less, I thoroughly enjoyed Star Wars, and paid a lot less on streaming, for what they would have charged for a physical disc. Special effects was out of this world (pardon the pun), and the sound effects were also amazing. I was very please that (with the exception of a few) almost all the original actors came back to do this movie.
John Boyega had a huge role in this movie, a long side phenomenal actors such as Harrison Ford. Well the story goes, John was one of the very many that were captured as children and trained to be a killer. However, he still had some heart left in him. When a friend was literally killed in front of his eyes while in battle, he brakes down and decides he does not want to be a storm trooper any longer, and starts thinking of a plan to escape Darth Vader’s successor, played by Adam Driver. He helps a prisoner escape, who happens to also be a pilot, together the managed to get away.
Another phenomenal lead actor is Daisy Ridley, who really kicks ass in this movie. Although I loved the movie, I haven’t followed the franchise the way real fans have, so there were a lot of things that confused me to be honest. There were certain questions that came of for me after the fact. Like, why do they say “may the force be with you?” When it’s quite obvious to me that the “force is already in them.” Is the force inherited through a genetic bloodline? Or is it given to those who take some kind of oath of the Jedi? I’ll guess I’ll have to talk to a diehard fan to find these questions out. However, as someone who didn’t follow every trilogy, I did enjoy the movie very much. You would not be so confused that you can’t get the jest of it.
Fast forward, Harrison Ford, Chewbacca, Daisy Ridley, and John Boyega all get together to stop Adam Driver from blowing up Harrison’s ship and crew (as well as other planets) using a very dangerous weapon. Lots and lots of action and special effects. I don’t think any Star Wars fan would be too disappointed. Again, everyone did wonderful job, even the robot had a comedic personality that worked very well in the movie. Well, I think I’ve given enough info, anymore I’d be giving spoilers. The movie is available in all major movie streaming services. Again, just want to remind you to not purchase from Youtube/Google yet, because as far as I know, they still don’t offer DD5.1 minimum. So, get it from Amazon, Vudu, or just rent the video from Netflix, it will be available starting tomorrow I think (just know that there may be a long wait for it).
This movie should not be confused with San Andreas Earthquake (2015) (which I have not seen yet). Much to my surprise, the movie was better than I thought. Although there was a lot of action, the 3D was somewhat disappointing. With all the action that was in this movie, I expected expected the 3D to be a little more dramatic. By the way, the I should mention that the retail 3D version is actually a conversion. The entire movie was not shot in 3D (hence, explains my disappointment) 🙁 . The special effects alone in the movie were believable. The CGI was pretty well done, and I did not detect any fake scenes (that I can remember). However, don’t spend extra money to purchase the 3D blu-ray version, your better off watching the standard 2D version on stream (or wait until it the 3D version comes available on cable). In essence, The Rock, is an air rescue guy, who’s job is to save as many people as he can during a deadly earthquake. This earthquake is so bad that it hits over 9 points on the richter scale! So basically the whole of California and then some is at risk of being destroyed. Unfortunately, as with all movies like this; it is very typical that no one believes the weather scientist/doctor played by Paul Giamatti. While The Rock is doing his best to stay alive, keep his ex-wife (or separated) alive, and trying to save his second daughter; we also learn that he was riddled with guilt, because of an accidental death of his first daughter. Having that regret, he risks all manor of danger trying to save his second daughter. Ioan Gruffudd also had a very small part in this movie. I hated his character, because he did something really messed up, but I can’t white about it because it would be a major spoiler. Check out the movie; like I said the special effects where pretty good; lots of action; just don’t waste money on the 3D. The 2D version of San Andreas (2015) is available on Amazon, but it’s not worth $20. Wait a little longer until the movie studio offers a license for rental.
It has been a really long time since I’ve enjoyed a really good vampire movie. You know, one thing that I think is sometimes bad in the film industry, when one film becomes a hit, they try to repeat the same “formula.” I can understand that as a business; however, as a movie fan it can get boring quite quickly if everyone is doing the same thing. I think that was what turned me off from seeing another vampire movie for a while. But, “Dracula Untold (2014) was such a good movie, I had to Netflix it again. I cannot recall any vampire movie that I actually wanted to see again (except for the original Fright Night (1985)). The very handsome Luke Evens, best known for “Lord Of The Rings” and Immortals,” did a fantastic job in this movie. The special effects were spot on, the colors were brilliant, there are very few bad things I can say about this movie. The story line has completely changed from what we’ve traditionally known about Dracula; and I think that’s part of the reason what made this movie so great. Removing at least some of the classic traditions of Dracula, also removed some of his limitations as Dracula as well. Dracula is still a monster in this movie, but we also got to see him be a loving husband, and a loving father. Now, that is something unheard of in vampire-ism. Lots of action from beginning to end. In essence, the movie is about a king witnessing untold amounts of his people being ferociously murdered; and makes a deal with the devil to give him supernatural ability to take vengeance; and to protect both the remainder of his people and family.
Recently, I finally got a chance to watch the last installment of the classic “Terminator.” “Terminator Genisys (2015)” was completely awesome in my opinion. The special effects were incredible! At first, when I saw his “moving image” cut and pasted on to the new Genisus movie, I was turned off by it. As someone who often pays attention to detail, I could immediately see the difference in quality between the cutout of the 1984 Arnold, inside the 2015 version of the movie. However, I am happy that I gave this movie a chance, because I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. The other thing I was concerned about, I wasn’t sure how well Arnold would play a robot at his age. I was really worried about seeing tons of fake looking CGI. But, in my opinion, Arnold delivered with lots and lots of action and suspense. The movie stars, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, and Jai Courtney. I have to say that, I was incredibly taken back as to just how much Jai Courtney, looks almost exactly like Lee Majors (you may not immediately see in the photograph, but when you see him in Terminator, you’ll notice). There is a lot of things going on in this movie, and unfortunately, you’ll really have to pay attention in order to understand the movie; because not only does it deal with a number of time travels, the movie also talks about a merge of memories and important stories not explained from the first Terminator. There were only two things that somewhat annoyed me in the movie. First, their time travel machine was very reminiscent of the TV show “Stargate.” Second, the main actors seemed to stay naked through the movie LOL. In order for our heroes to time travel, they can’t have any clothing on, because something happens where the person disintegrates or something. I don’t want to give any spoilers, and I also don’t want to complicate this review trying to explain the many elements of the movie. So, I’ll some it up this way; our heroes go back in time to actually stop dooms day from happening. However, none of them suspected that someone very close to them, is responsible for trying to destroy the planet.
