One Hit Wonders

Alright guys, be honest….. How many of you thought Karen Young was Black when you first heard her voice? I know I did!! I think Karen Young was like a soulful version of Teena Marie! LOLOL I really can’t think of any other comparison right now. I used to rock the sh*t out of this song! And I don’t mean the little 45rpm either. This song was jumping from beginning to end, I don’t know how many remixed versions of this song exist, but I know it’s a LOT. The song “Hot Shot” hit #1 on the dance charts in 1978, and she had become a living icon of the disco era ever since. I personally remember playing this on just about ever birthday party we had. Unfortunately, Hot Shot was Karen’s one and only big hit of her career. She later on died about the age of 39-40, due to what was thought to be severe complications from an ulcer.

Well, if you hate this group, like it or not, this became the hottest hit on the mid 80s dance charts. The band that called themselves “Dominatrix,” released their one and only hit single called “Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight.” This song came at the right time, as freestyle music literally dominated the club world in the 1980s. When I first heard this song, I was like “WTF is this?” It was so different, I really didn’t know what to make of it. I think part of what through me off was that, this was an American band, but when you listen to the song, they sound very much European. The video is even weirder; I remembered first watching it during the start of MTV. The song climbed up to #2 and stayed relevant for about 18 weeks or so. It was said that the video caused a lot of controversy, however, I don’t think the band pushed any more buttons than Madonna did during her prime.

You know, to be honest, I’m not sure if this group had other notable hits. But, as far as I’m concerned, this was the only song I liked from the group. “You’re Too Late,” was released in 1980, and peaked at #1 on the U.S. Dance Charts, and #28 on the R&B/Hip Hop Charts. As far as I can tell, this was their one and only major hit Now, personally speaking, it’s not that I think the band was horrible; their music was pretty decent; its just that it wasn’t enough for me to spend money on their albums. Much of their music contained a pop and funk style to them. It’s hard for me to place their kind of music, because when I listen to the groups albums spanning 10 years, their kind all over the place. This is a band you definitely have to have an acquired taste for.
